What to Expect for Your First Massage

It was everyone’s first massage at one point in time. Here at True Health, we aim to make your massage therapy experience relaxing, restorative, and comfortable; regardless if this is your first massage or one hundredth. Here are some quick tips and tricks when it comes to your first massage.

Before:

First things first, drink water! You will thank us later. Making sure you drink plenty of water before your massage will keep your muscles hydrated, support detoxing, and help reduce any soreness after a massage.

Second, arrive early! We suggest arriving 15 minutes early to each appointment. For your first appointment you will be asked to fill out a general health intake form and consent form. Pro Tip: You can do this ahead of time by printing the form from our website or following the link sent to your email confirming your appointment.

Lastly, don’t forget to silence your phone! Telemarketers have a 6th sense for calling when you’re trying to relax…trust me.

During (Now onto the good stuff):

Don’t be nervous, but it is okay if you are! Here are some quick bullet points on what to expect during your massage session:

You will go over your health intake form, identify goals and expectations for the massage, discuss any areas discomfort you are looking to address, as well as, any areas you would like them to avoid (For anyone weirded out by their feet being touched…don’t worry, we will only focus on the areas you are comfortable with).

You will get detailed instructions on how to begin the massage such as disrobing, positioning yourself on the table, and properly using the draping to cover yourself.

When it comes to disrobing, the level you decide to disrobe down to is completely up to your discretion and what you feel comfortable with. Always, your therapist will make sure you are properly draped and covered throughout the entire massage.

(Pro Tip: You will have only a few minutes to disrobe and get yourself positioned on the massage table. Although you can take as much time as you need, keep in mind your session starts on your appointment time)

Throughout the massage, the therapist may ask you about pressure and comfort. Open communication between therapist and client is encouraged. At any point, you may (and most definitely should) let your therapist know if you want more or less pressure, are too hot or cold, are uncomfortable or in any pain.

It is okay to be quiet. Don’t feel obligated to carry a conversation during your massage. This is your time to relax and unwind.

We appreciate you wanting to help, but you really don’t need to hold your head up for us. Your therapist may want to reposition you or perform a stretch during your massage. Don’t feel like you need to help us do this. Most of the time when you help us, you actually engage the muscle(s) we are trying to relax and work.

Your feedback is appreciated and valued. After your massage, your therapist will check-in with how you are feeling and if you enjoyed your experience. Of course we love hearing about your favorite parts, at True Health we are always working towards improving to make each massage better than the last. If there is something that would have enhanced your experience, we want to know about it.

After (Enjoying the post-massage bliss):

What you will really want after a massage, is another massage and we can definitely set that up for you. You will also want to do the following.

Drink water, a lot of it!

It is common to feel sore after a massage. This should last only a few days, at most. Want to know the best way to avoid this? You guessed it, make sure you are drinking enough water.

Lastly, Remember to thank yourself for making your wellness a priority!
